Hi All,

I’ve been a little behind on the blog. But we’ve been keeping up with the knitting!

I hope all your hats for our group Knit-Along Beret are going well – I have not finished mine yet, but BioNerd informed me that she finished hers. You can see her comment on a previous post mentioning that it looks really small while knitting, but turns out ok.

We are taking a break for the holidays – our next meeting will be Thursday January 7th. Keep an eye out for the emails!

Our blanket and hat count is at 13 blankets, and 15 hats. I will be making a delivery on Monday Dec 28.

Keep up the good work!

And stay tuned for a new charity project we will be doing together with the Sloan Kettering Knitting Club next semester.

Happy Holidays!

A bunch of new items received over the last few months… if I am missing something you gave me, just let me know, I have not been as good at keeping track of who gave me what.

As always, click on any photo to enlarge.

Here are the pattern and Knitting Abbreviations from Vogue’s Knitting Magazine.

We will start making this hat once everyone gets their supplies (hopefully by the next meeting).

We’ll post pictures here as we knit and post any questions that arise during our meetings.

Happy Knitting!

Hi All,

Hope your hats and blankets are coming along well.

Our next meeting is scheduled for Wed Oct 7 at 7:30pm. I hope you all received the email.

See you then!

A new edition of New Items Friday!

Sterling was kind enough to donate some awesome yarn and needles for our use! Let me know if you would like some of this cool yarn for our donation knitting!

You can see a scarf and some knit flowers in that pile as well. I’m currently researching new charities for us to donate to. (Suggestions are highly welcome!)

And she also made a very cute hat.

And, I finally finished the blanket I used as a model for the last post.

What about you? How’s everything chugging along?

Our next meeting will be in October. I can’t wait to see all your knitting extravaganzas!

Please don’t forget to vote for the best day of the week for our meetings!

Here is a basic pattern for a blanket to cover the preemie incubators in the NICU.

We try to make these about 20 inches x 28 inches, but other sizes are fine as well. Because the blankets are so wide, it is easiest to use circular needles.

  • Cast on 80 stitches
  • Knit 8 rows
  • Then keeping the first and last 4 stitches in garter stitch (knitting every row), the middle stitches (divisible by 8) are worked as follows:
    • Rows 1-6: Knit 4, Purl 4 across
    • Rows 7 -12: Purl 4, Knit 4 across
  • Repeat 12 rows until 28 inches long
  • End by knitting 8 rows
  • Bind off loosely.

You can always add different patterns if you get bored of the repetition.

Here is an example of the blanket in production.

Pretty simple right?

Thanks to all that came to our first meeting of the year!

Need some more help with knitting? There are plenty of websites out there with videos to show you exactly what you should be doing.

This knittinghelp.com, is my favorite, it gives you step by step instructions in movie format on how to knit.

If you are confused about what size to make the hat, here is a size chart for head circumferences.

There is also a Wikipedia like website for knitting. It will answer some of your most dire questions.

You can also check out the blogroll on the right for further knitting help and websites.

So, now you tell me, any cool websites we should know more about for knitting?

Yup, our new year of knitting begins this week! I can’t wait to start up the compiling of a new donation.

I am very excited to meet all of the new students and for the return of all the grad student knitters out there (No disrespect to the crochetters as well, you guys rock too and make some super cool hats).

We have a pile of yarn to go through (literally). And this picture is only of the yarn I have made into balls.

Hope to see you at our first meeting on Wednesday, Sept 9!  (If you have not received the grad-school email, please leave a comment or send me an email.)

And, please vote in the poll on the sidebar. I’m trying to figure out what day of the week is best for everyone.

We got some beautiful blankets this week for our New Items Friday.

A knitted blanket by Ethel (the pink one) and 5 crocheted blankets by Cathy.

(as usual, click on image to enlarge).

Some babies are going to be so cute sporting these blankets on their incubator covers.
