Here is a basic pattern for a blanket to cover the preemie incubators in the NICU.
We try to make these about 20 inches x 28 inches, but other sizes are fine as well. Because the blankets are so wide, it is easiest to use circular needles.
- Cast on 80 stitches
- Knit 8 rows
- Then keeping the first and last 4 stitches in garter stitch (knitting every row), the middle stitches (divisible by 8) are worked as follows:
- Rows 1-6: Knit 4, Purl 4 across
- Rows 7 -12: Purl 4, Knit 4 across
- Repeat 12 rows until 28 inches long
- End by knitting 8 rows
- Bind off loosely.
You can always add different patterns if you get bored of the repetition.
Here is an example of the blanket in production.
Pretty simple right?

What size circular needle are you using? Is it possible to use a 24″ circular instead of a 29″?

yup, 24” circular needles should work fine. You can always scrunch up the stitches a bit on a shorter needle.

Thank you, I will be starting some of these blankets soon. Can you recommend a Charity in Alabama?

Sounds good!
Sorry, I have no idea about charities in Alabama.
